General Information About the Workshops in Santa Fe and at Ghost Ranch:

Content and format are the same at both locations. Instruction takes place 9-5 daily with a long lunch break and after-hours access to the studio.  Workshops consist of numerous demonstrations and many examples of finished work to accompany each skill. Ample time is reserved for hands-on skill development and guidance is given to help individuals strategize and reach goals. Attendees may register for one workshop, or do both workshops for a comprehensive encaustic experience. For those taking both, there is a free day between for uninstructed work in the studio (or for sightseeing, hiking, or visiting Santa Fe galleries and museums). Read more about the COMPREHENSIVE WORKSHOPS, below.

Both locations offer beautiful scenery, hiking trails, and the opportunity for group sharing and networking. Rooms are available for single or double occupancy. Double occupancy is recommended for economy (bring a friend or we will try to find you a roommate—non-participants are welcome). The Santa Fe workshops provide a city workshop with a country feel. They are held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Retreat and Conference Center April 4-10, 2008. The IHM Center is on the historic East side of Santa Fe, near the mountain foothills and only one mile from Canyon Road galleries, museums, and restaurants. The Ghost Ranch Conference Center provides a rustic retreat in a magnificent setting. The Ranch is located in Abiquiu, NM, one hour north of Santa Fe. Ghost Ranch was the summer home and inspirational landscape of Georgia O’Keeffe. The next workshops at Ghost Ranch are in 2009.

Paula Roland, Sari, Encaustic Monotype

Instructor  Paula Roland  began teaching  encaustic in 1997, after many years as a professor of painting and drawing in universities and colleges. The spontaneous medium of encaustic, with its infinite possibilities, provided a new focus for her art and teaching. Many of the encaustic printmaking techniques were developed by Paula and are taught exclusively by her. Paula leads participants through a myriad of choices and options. She is the catalyst for exciting new possibilities in encaustic and her teaching provides the knowledge, skills, and confidence to continue after the workshop.

In 2007 Paula was a key presenter at the First National Encaustic Painting Conference in Beverly, MA. and will appear there again in 2008. Roland has taught Encaustic Monotype Printmaking and Encaustic Painting nationally, including: International Encaustic Artists’ Association (Master Class) in N. CA; The Dorothy Furlong Gardner Studio in Louisiana; Chautauqua Institute for Art, Chautauqua, New York, The Santa Fe Art Institute; The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum; The Santa Fe Community College; And the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, Mississippi. In addition Roland has self-organized over 80 workshops for The Open Studio LLC in Santa Fe, and other New Mexico locations. Roland resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

History of Ghost Ranch and Georgia O’Keeffe

http://www.ghostranch.org/about/index.php. Pedernal, the flat-topped mountain to the south, was probably her favorite subject. "It's my private mountain," she frequently said. "God told me if I painted it often enough I could have it."
