About the Workshops in Santa Fe and at Ghost Ranch:

Instruction takes place 9-4 daily with after-hours access to the studio.  Workshops consist of numerous demonstrations and many examples of finished work to accompany each skill. Ample time is reserved for hands-on skill development and guidance is given to help individuals strategize and reach goals. Attendees may register for one workshop, or do both workshops for a comprehensive encaustic experience. For those taking both, there is a free day between for uninstructed work in the studio (or for sightseeing, hiking, or visiting Santa Fe galleries and museums).

Both locations offer beautiful scenery, hiking trails, and the opportunity for group sharing and networking. Rooms are available for single or double occupancy (for doubles, bring a friend or we will try to find you a roommate). The Santa Fe workshops are held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary IHM) Retreat and Conference Center May 25-June 2, 2006. The IHM Center is on the historic East side of Santa Fe, near the mountain foothills and only one mile from Canyon Road galleries, museums, and restaurants. The Ghost Ranch Conference Center is the sight of our August 27-September 4, 2006 workshops. Ghost Ranch is located in Abiquiu, NM, one hour north of Santa Fe. Ghost Ranch was the summer home and inspirational landscape of Georgia O’Keeffe. Read participants' comments about last year's workshop.

Instruction

Paula Roland SARI I. Encaustic print on kozo paper. The encaustic workshops are taught by Paula Roland, who began teaching encaustic 1997, after a career teaching painting and drawing in universities and colleges. Many of the encaustic printmaking techniques were developed by Paula and are taught exclusively by her. Paula leads participants through a myriad of choices and options. She is the catalyst for exciting new possibilities in encaustic and her teaching provides the knowledge, skills, and confidence to continue after the workshop.

Roland has taught encaustic printmaking and at the Chautauqua Institute for Art in New York, the  Santa Fe Art Institute, the Santa Fe Community College, the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, Mississippi, and in over 80 workshops in the Open Studio in Santa Fe. Paula’s work is featured in New Mexico Magazine, October, 2002, New American Painting (# 24) and The Art of Encaustic Painting: Contemporary Expression in the Ancient Medium of  Pigmented Wax, by Joanne Mattera  (Watson-Guptill, 2001). She has received numerous commissions, fellowships and awards, including one from the National Endowment for the Arts. For more about the Artist-Teacher click here.

Audrey Phillips - Encaustic and mixed media on panel

Audrey Philips, an artist from Orlando, Florida, will assist Paula in the workshops, as she did at Ghost Ranch in 2005. Audrey works in encaustic and mixed media and brings with her a wealth of information, enthusiasm, and a sunny disposition. Audrey will also handle pre-workshop questions and registration.

Audrey, who has her own graphic design business, became enamored of encaustic several years ago, after taking her first workshop with Paula. Audrey has exhibited her encaustics in Florida, Georgia, and Santa Fe. Among the honors and awards for her work, Audrey was named Florida Artist of the Month by the Orlando Museum of Art and was selected for a PBS documentary of local Orlando artists.
