About Santa Fe and
The Encaustic Workshops

The Open Studio is 1100 square feet of open professional space. Each participant has a work area and equipment. From the studio there is a view of the beautiful Sangre de Christo Mountains and the blue skies of Santa Fe. The Open Studio is located 3 miles from Santa Feâs historic Plaza. It is located in the West Side Studios, a semi-rural compound of artists that over the years has seen the likes of John Chamberlain, Fritz Sholder, T.C. Cannon and numerous others.

As you may know Santa Fe New Mexico is a beautiful vacation spot as well as a center for the art and cultural activities. If you are able, plan to spend a few extra days to take advantage of the big blue skies, the mountains, Georgia O'Keeffe country and the Native American and Hispanic cultural activities. Also plan to visit our numerous galleries and museums. In the summer, be sure to attends the International Santa Fe Opera, out of doors, with the mountains as a backdrop.

Santa Fe is the third largest art market in the US. Our many galleries span kitsch, crafts, traditional art and high end contemporary art. It can be overwhelming to find your way. Therefore, I would like to include a visit to the contemporary galleries in the five day workshop for those who are interested.

When you come, please bring slides or photos of your work to help me guide you toward your goals in the workshop.

Accommodations in Santa Fe

This is not meant to be a complete list of hotels but to acquaint you with the various parts of town as well as some alternatives. All are within an easy 5-15 minute drive to the studio. I’ve done some preliminary research on summer prices for one to two people. Book early---summer is the busy season. The guesthouses listed may sleep up to several people.

My choice for best noncommercial atmosphere for the money

Guadalupe District is a fun area with many shops and restaurants and within walking distance to plaza: Santa Fe Budget Inn 505-982-5952$69- $94. *** El Paradero (B&B) 505-988-1177 $65-$115, www.elparadero.com

Historic Eastside of Santa Fe: A charming residential area, very near Canyon Road galleries, cafes, and restaurants. (Also within walking distance to Plaza).
*** Lucy Cornwell’s Guest Cottages- Lucy, an artist-friend, has three lovely rentals with kitchenettes-- for around $99-$125/nite. Will sleep two or more. Mention the Encaustic Monotype Workshops and receive a discount!!! 1-800-988-4664.
Santa Fe Alternative Accommodations: 1-800-995-2272, lists houses, guesthouses, and rooms. Usually require three nights stay and some of these sleep several people.

Cerrillos Road Area (The not-so-scenic part of Santa Fe--a busy road with strip shopping, less expensive than plaza area). These are the usual suspects, that also have 1-800 #âs, not listed here.
