2006 Master Class in Encaustic Printmaking for International Encaustic Artists Association (formerly WCEA, West Coast encaustic Artists), Novato, CA. Just had to write and tell you how much I enjoyed meeting you and learning such brilliant processes you taught at the WCEA -Encaustic Monotype Printmaking Workshop! It's been amazing how th ose 2 dayshave opened up my creativity and shifting me in new directions. Much is still unfolding and I'm studying your detailed handouts and so glad to have them! Your style of teaching was absolutely fabulous for me and I felt so at ease with such a large group! Cyndy Goldman, encaustic artist Just wanted you to know how much I loved and learned from you last weekend. You are so great at explaining and demonstrating your process. It has opened up a "Whole New World" for me in encaustic. Jimmie Beardsley GHOST RANCH 2006 As an artist already familiar with encaustic painting, I came to your workshops with very high expectations and the specific goal of learning the process of encaustic printmaking. I believe that when you expect the best, you get the best. Your workshops did not disappoint me…your approach coupled with your organizational skills and artistic excellence produced two workshops at the highest level… Diana Gonzalez Gandolfi, encaustic artist This was a perfect re-entry into art for me. Kathryn Shelley, artist ..Formal enough to learn the techniques, but informal enough to spend sufficient time working on our own…I appreciate the way Paula fostered an environment of sharing and learning from each other. ..This has been one of my very best art experiences… Carolyn Albracht, artist The workshops were more than I could have imagined. Great teaching. You got me over some problems that you had no idea were there—me either for that matter—It was a great experience. I would do it again and probably will! Thank you, Clara K. Wick. artist SANTA FE 2006 The workshop in Santa Fe was so fabulous…this was one of the best workshops I have ever attended, and I have attended a lot of them in my career as an artist. Paula is a fabulous teacher and a wonderful person. It was fun, informative, and challenging. And the encaustic monotype process she teaches is extremely valuable to us as encaustic artists, whether we intend to work in encaustic printmaking or not. The ability to develop a body of work on paper will be invaluable to me and I consider the cost of this workshop well worth the investment…Sandi Miot, encaustic artist, excerpt from a letter to members of the West Coast Encaustic Artists Extremely stimulating, Gay Lasher, photo and fiber artist Thanks for all your gusto, inspiration, and details, details…I loved it and I’m percolating how to use encaustic in my jewelry! Susan Wise, metal artist I feel like I made a big breakthrough with the use of encaustic, thanks to the new (to me) discipline of encaustic printmaking and being so engrossed for those wonderful days. Thank you for your knowledge, inspiration and generosity, not to mention the fun! Rae Miller, encaustic artist. GHOST RANCH 2005 The high point of my summer was the workshop at Ghost Ranch - that was the best and I think about it everyday. I learned so much and the people were so special. What a group - it was intense which was what I wanted. An incredible experience that I'll never forget. Sandy Quinn, encaustic artist Paula's professional approach to teaching encaustic is packed with important facts concerning the medium paired with hands-on demonstrations. I am returning to my studio with a wealth of information in the form of notes, hand-outs and visual examples. Plus I am going home with a feeling of energized inspiration regarding future work. Thank You! Valerie Allen, artist The Ghost Ranch workshops have been the most professional and formative I've ever experienced. The demos were comprehensive and include a wealth of ideas. I'm going to be able to move forward with confidence! Thanks. Dodi Klutznick, painter Great work--your attention to detail was unsurpassed. I was lacking nothing..Paula, you and Audrey were a pleasure to be with. Inspiring... unsurpassed...Irene Sperber, photographer

The encaustic monotype helps to expand my thought process when making art. It's a great way to break free of old stifling habits. Claudia Balthop, artist CLASSES OVER THE YEARS.. .I've studied a lot the past 20 years. Paula is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Patient, supportive, and organized--hard to find that combination. Paula's spontaneity is inspiring. Karen Factor, adventurous beginner This is an awesome workshop for painters, drawers, or printmakers. We've learned so much that could be used in any medium. It's personalized and you can walk away with pieces that enhance your own body of work. Ann M. Clark, artist The workshop was a meditation. It’s printmaking for painters--no rules or restrictions! I am thrilled to have finally found a medium that is so giving , forgiving, rich and versatile to work with. There are endless possibilities. -Happy Price, painter ...techniques found no where else. The atmosphere in the studio was one of warmth and generosity.
So much fun it oughtta be illegal. -Zoe Smith, artist This process gets you to the unconscious place where art is created - quickly and in a playful way. I just wanted to write to you and thank you for a wonderfully inspirational weekend. I cannot tell you how excited I am, and how frustrating it is not to be able to come home and carry on! I can’t wait to get all my stuff sorted ....Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I really do appreciate it.
The workshop was informative, well organized and professional. I still
enjoy using the process and would recommend the workshop to anyone, and I
do! - Woody Farris, sculptor Encaustic paint together with the monotype medium-a great combination towards freedom of expression. The course is informative and fun. A real turn -on! It's a wonderful process that completely revitalized my art. Lynn Laier, painter Flowing spontaneous creativity, it has a life of its own - Lucy Lyons, glass artist I so enjoyed your class, I just can’t tell you how much. I have continued to do encaustic prints and had 3 pieces in the Orlando Museum of Art recently in a small show, and have been accepted into 2 Orlando Galleries with the new work. Yippee! Plus invited into another Museum show in May 2001. So it’s been really exciting. See what you started! Thank you for sharing your talent. -Audrey Phillips, artist I was looking for a safer medium to replace oils, and I found it. But more than that, the encaustic monotype workshop opened a new creative door for me.l This is a flexible new tool and medium. It’s an exciting way of working that I can do in my own studio Paula Roland’s Encaustic Monotypes Workshop at the Open Studio in Santa Fe is a complete, progressive course combining a medium long in existence -- beeswax based pigment--with the popular monotype process. Paula combines these two so that whatever your level of experience and subject interest you are able to express yourself in this adaptive medium-technique. She quickly takes you through the skills necessary to do encaustic monotypes then offers ideas to spur your imagination to capture the ideas that interest you. Since she provides the materials, paper and equipment, the cost of the workshop becomes an investment of time, time well spent. Under her tutelage, each encaustic monotype progressively improves your skills and knowledge to carry to your next monotype. Her spontaneity and open heart meant, to me, the most enjoyable workshop I’ve ever participated in. - Martha Blue, artist, writer and retired lawyer |
