BIOGRAPHY

Background
Paula Maenza Roland was born in Biloxi, Mississippi and spent much of her adult life living and working in New Orleans. She has an MFA from the University of New Orleans. In 1989 Paula Roland moved from the Gulf Coast to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

“I am drawn to areas with a strong and visual sense of place and that are rich culturally. My works deal with extremes in nature and the natural world’s intersect with culture, science, art, and spirit.”

Paula received an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and was awarded two solo exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. She also received two installation grants from the CAC. Roland has had 14 solo exhibitions and nearly 100 group exhibitions. Recent exhibitions include William Siegal Gallery in Santa Fe, and Gallerie Urbane, Marfa Texas, during the Chinati Open House.

Teaching
A lifelong teacher, Roland taught at many universities and colleges, including the University of New Mexico, the University of New Orleans, the Institute of American Indian Arts, The Santa Fe Community College, and the College of Santa Fe.

In 1996, Paula Roland developed a curriculum for the little-known process of encaustic monotypes. Simultaneously, Roland founded The Open Studio, dedicated to creating opportunities for artists through innovative teaching. Through The Open Studio, Roland provides the only known classes devoted to encaustic printmaking and encaustic-on-paper techniques. Hundreds of artists from the Americas, Europe, and Australia have participated in Roland's encaustic workshops and classes.

In addition to teaching in The Open Studio, Roland has taught the process at other institutions including the prestigious Santa Fe Art Institute, Chautauqua School of Art, the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, and the Santa Fe Children's Museum. Paula also taught a semester-long course in Encaustic Printmaking at the Santa Fe Community College, the only known course of its kind. Roland is included in the programs of the National Encaustic Painting Conference, 2007 and 2008, speaking on Encaustic Monotypes.
